The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have granted Schwabe Pharma (UK) Ltd a Traditional Herbal Registration Certificate for two products containing St John’s wort extract at strengths of 250 mg and 425 mg of extract in each tablet as detailed below:

KarmaMood® Maximum Strength St John’s wort tablets: THR 23056/0007 425 mg
KarmaMood® St John’s wort tablets: THR 23056/0011 250 mg

Both products are available without a prescription and can be purchased from pharmacies, mass market retailers and on-line.

The active ingredient of both KarmaMood products comes from the aerial parts of the plant Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John’s wort). KarmaMood® St John’s wort is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms of slightly low mood and mild anxiety, based on traditional use only.

These registrations are based exclusively upon longstanding use of the extract from the aerial parts of the plant and not upon data generated from clinical trials. This is because there is no requirement under the Traditional Herbal Registration Scheme to prove scientifically that the product works.

However, there is a large body of published clinical and pre-clinical evidence relating to Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John’s wort) that forms the basis of this monograph, which should be read in conjunction with the current Summary of Product Characteristics.
